Refurbished MacBook buying guide (US)
Short answer: buy a MacBook with an Apple chip (M1 or later). macOS 27, released September 14, 2026, runs only on Apple silicon Macs, so refurbished Intel MacBooks are stuck on older macOS. Choose enough RAM and storage up front, because you can't upgrade them later.
No prices yet, on purpose. We only publish a price when it comes from a retailer's own data on the day we check it, and our US retailer feeds aren't connected yet. Until they are, these pages are free buying advice with no shop links and nothing for sale.
Which MacBooks get macOS 27?
| MacBook | Latest macOS |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 (2020) and later, MacBook Pro M1 (2020) and later, MacBook Neo | macOS 27 |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019) and MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020, four Thunderbolt 3 ports), the last Intel models | macOS Tahoe 26 |
| Other Intel MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models | An older macOS |
Apple said Intel Macs will keep getting security updates for three years (MacRumors), but new features stop. Unless an Intel MacBook is very cheap and you only need the basics, an M1 or newer is the better buy.
Five checks before you buy
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Chip: Apple M-series, not Intel | Apple menu › About This Mac shows “Chip” followed by an M-series name on Apple silicon, or “Processor” and an Intel name on Intel models. |
| RAM and storage | Neither can be upgraded after purchase on recent MacBooks, so buy the size you will need for the next few years. |
| Battery cycle count | Apple rates recent MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles. Find the count under System Information › Power (Apple). |
| Activation Lock and company management | The previous owner must have signed out of Find My, and the Mac must not be enrolled in a company's device management. |
| Keyboard, screen and ports | Test every key, look for marks on the screen coating and try each port during the return window. |

Questions
Is a refurbished M1 MacBook Air still worth buying?
It runs macOS 27, Apple's current version, so it still gets new features and security updates. Whether it's worth it depends on the price compared with M2 and newer models, so check the battery cycle count and warranty too.
Should I buy a refurbished Intel MacBook?
Usually not. macOS 27 supports only Apple silicon Macs, so Intel MacBooks get no new macOS features, although Apple said they will receive security updates for three years.
